This course focuses on building upon the skills students have learned in junior English and further develops their language skills to prepare them for NCEA assessment.  They will learn:

  • how to write confidently in a range of styles to express their ideas.
  • how to explore and articulate their ideas verbally through speeches, presentations and debates.
  • how to closely read and analyse moving visual texts.
  • how to use processes and structures to understand and respond to surface level and deeper ideas within texts.
  • why and how to use accurate and appropriate language in a range of situations and for different audiences.

Students will study and discuss texts that both mirror their world and open a window to the world around them.

Students will be engaging in texts, such as short films, novels, poems, and songs, myths and legends. This course will develop their writing skills, reading comprehension, speaking skills, cinematographic and visual skills as well as critical thinking skills.

AS90851 - Unfamiliar Texts (Introduction in class then ongoing); AS90856 - Close Viewing (complete unit)​​​​​​​
KEY DATES: Week 10: Close viewing assessment

Term 2
AS90851 - Unfamiliar Texts (ongoing); AS90849 - Begin written text study for external (ongoing at home);
AS90852 - Connections across texts; AS90855 - Create a visual text.
KEY DATES: Week 10 Connections and visual text due

Term 3
AS90851 - Unfamiliar texts (ongoing); AS90857 - Present speech (optional); AS90849 - Written texts study for external - links to AS90053 & AS90052​​​​​​​;
AS90857 - Oral presentation (optional); AS90053 - Formal writing (complete unit); AS90052 - Creative writing (complete unit).
KEY DATES: Week 10: Formal and creative writing due. Derived Grade examinations.

Term 4
Preliminary examinations. Revision for AS90849 and AS90851 (3 weeks)
KEY DATES: Week 5 NCEA examinations.

Students will require a 1B5 excercise book, and if possible, their own chromebook.


Recommended Prior Learning

Entry is by success in Year 10 English. This is determined by work ethic and achievement.
